Avenues CERT – Community Emergency Response Team
December: Cold Weather Preparedness – As we begin to experience cold temperatures in Salt Lake City, it’s important to make sure your are #WinterReady. One way to prepare for cold weather is to have a plan for power outages, which can disrupt communications, transportation, utilities such as heat or water, and many other important day-to-day operations. Tips to prepare for a power outage include: Keep freezers and refrigerators closed. Throw away any food that has been exposed to temperatures 40 degrees or higher for two hours or more, or that has an unusual odor, color or texture. If you use a generator, ONLY use it outdoors and away from
windows. Do not use a gas stove or oven to heat your home. Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid damage from electrical surges.
T o avoid cold-related emergencies, a. Wear layered clothing, b. Stay outside as short a time as possible, c. Bring additional layers, d. Monitor local weather forecasts
